ABOUT:

UPNYC continues our nonet commissioning project with new works by Ryan Brown, Julia Seeholzer and 7 Queens College New Music Group composers. This program also features an excerpt of Christian Carey's Gilgamesh Suite.

World Premiere: Ryan Brown (Kronos Quartet, Roomful of Teeth, Crash Ensemble, New York Philharmonic CONTACT! series) has been called “nimble, expressive, ear-tuning and strange in an accessible way.”

Orange Enough for Marc
This piece plays with my thoughts on the organic and mechanical, imbued with the color orange, which immediately reminds me of that book by Anthony Burgess. You know the one. There's also some Marc Mellits towards the end. I think he would find it's orange enough.

World Premiere: Julia Seeholzer (Esterhazy String Quartet, Kalistos Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic) has been called “ingenious,” “lyrical”, and “gently offbeat.”

I take these pills
"Whenever I get to a certain point in building a familiar to close relationship with someone, the topic inevitably surfaces. “Well, I have chronic anxiety and depression, so I take these pills to regulate my day-to-day existence in the world.” After Tom Cunningham (UPNYC director and the piece’s commissioner) told me that the commission theme centered around one’s personal take on the concept of “adequacy,” I immediately thought of my daily interaction with depression and anxiety, and by proxy, the medication that is supposed to help.

“I take these pills” is such a direct statement, and one which I say with intent but without drama, without stigma. I find it quite satisfying to express such a significant, yet ordinary part of my life through a piece of my own music."

Gilgamesh Suite, Mvmt III: Christian Carey (ACME, loadbang, Aspen New Music Ensemble)

Gilgamesh Suite 'is a newly composed work based on selections from incidental music I contributed to the play 'Gilgamesh Variations,' produced at Brooklyn’s Bushwick Starr Theatre in 2011. Written to commemorate the 2012 John Cage centenary, its touchstone work is 'Sonatas and Interludes.' Instead of creating a trope on Cageian compositional practices, I focused on incorporating the rich sound palette of the work’s prepared piano into the play’s eclectic and highly gestural aesthetic.
